NEW BOARD POLICY & REGULATION CHANGES

Eligibility for Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

Dear Parents, Students, MCS School Community:

On November 29, 2011, the Board of Commissioners approved revisions to the policies on Extracurricular Activities (4.300) and Interscholastic Athletics (4.301).  These revisions were specifically designed to ensure that student athletes and students participating in other extracurricular activities are able to derive the maximum academic benefit from their educational experiences at their school and within the school district.  These changes also are intended to ensure that our students are positioned to take advantage of athletic-eligibility and scholarships being offered.  Additionally, the policies help ensure that students are academically prepared to maintain their participation throughout their collegiate experience.

The major revisions to the policies/regulations introduce higher academic eligibility standards for participation in interscholastic athletics and other extracurricular activities.  The policies also require principals, sponsors, athletic directors, and coaches to ensure that the academic performance of students participating in athletes or other extracurricular activities is monitored during the entire academic year, rather than during the activity period or athletic season only. According to the revised policies, in order for middle and high school students to participate in athletics or other extracurricular activities, they must maintain a semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 and earn a passing grade in at least five (5) courses the previous semester or the equivalent thereof to be eligible for the next semester. The 2.0 semester GPA requirement may be waived for non-athletic extracurricular activities, if the student is otherwise eligible for the activity and the student’s participation is recommended by a teacher or administrator for intervention or for student engagement purposes.  The academic standards required by the policies are effective as of January 2012, and will be implemented beginning with the March 2012 report card.

The implementation process will adhere to the following timeline:

  1. February 2012– Provide information regarding the policy revisions
  2. March 2012 – Begin implementation using the March 21st report card (3rd 9 weeks Report Card  Period)
  3. April 2012 – Conduct Compliance Check and Review
    1. Generate and confirm the list of students ineligible to continue participation in an extracurricular and/or athletic activity based on the March 21st report card
    2. b. NOTE: Students who were eligible at the beginning of the semester based on the new academic standards should retain their eligibility, regardless of the grades/GPA on the March report card
    3. May 2012 – Provide students with notice of their ineligibility.  These students will be removed from the extracurricular activity and/or athletic activity for the remainder of the spring semester.

In accordance with these revisions, please be reminded that each student’s academic performance this semester will be used to determine eligibility for next semester.  Therefore, in anticipation of next semester, students are encouraged to devote attention and effort to their academic performance, including taking advantage of available interventions, if needed.

The policies on Extracurricular Activities (4.300) and Interscholastic Athletics (4.301) are available online at http://www.mcsk12.net/policy/policy.asp.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the MIAA Division at 416-7470.

Thanks for your continued support of the district’s Cradle to Career Academic Initiative.
